GPS-Denied Tracking at Thunderstorm 18-2
Military and first responders face daunting challenges when they are forced to operate in GPS-denied environments and are unable to be tracked adequately. Environments such as tunnels, buildings, and urban canyons can hamper a team’s accountability and situational awareness for public safety operations.
Thunderstorm 18-2 Dense Urban and Subterranean Technologies (DUST) Demonstration is an exercise that provides an opportunity for technology companies to demonstrate new and evolving product capabilities in an operationally relevant environment, as well as to obtain insight into federal technology gaps and emerging needs. The demonstration occurred in GPS-denied environments across New York City including tunnels, transit hubs and large commercial buildings. Thunderstorm 18-2 focused on a number of important new technologies:

At Thunderstorm 18-2, NEON® Personnel Tracker was used to track personnel within challenging indoor, underground, and urban GPS-denied environments. Personnel Tracker showcased ability to improve safety and situational awareness in some of the most challenging GPS-denied environments in NY City by tracking personnel throughout deep subterranean environments, including the Metropolitan Transportation Authority East Side Access, as well as an 80-story skyscraper.
NEON Personnel Tracker
NEON® Personnel Tracker is a 3D mapping and tracking solution that improves safety and situational awareness for personnel operating in industrial, security, public safety, and defense applications. Personnel Tracker provides ubiquitous 3D location, tracking and mapping for personnel operating indoors and in any GPS-denied location.
NEON Personnel Tracker is an Android application tightly integrated with the NEON Location Service where a suite of patented algorithms fuse inertial sensor data, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi readings as well as inferred map and building data to deliver reliable 3D location. Users with a small NEON Tracking Unit attached and carrying an Android device can now be tracked and located in real-time or for playback during after-action review. Ultra-wideband or Bluetooth beacons may be implemented for initialization of location and to enhance location precision. The Android based NEON Location Service is also available for integration with third-party applications via the NEON API.
